On Friday, September 25, 2020, the State’s Attorney’s Office had the honor of supporting Lifestyle of Southern Maryland‘s event, “The Big Hair Ball” which aims to raise essential funds needed to meet the needs of women and children in crisis.

On Friday, July 17, 2020, State’s Attorney Tony Covington held a virtual meeting with a local youth group to speak about the work of the State’s Attorney’s Office, police brutality, and more.

On March 12, 2020, State’s Attorney Tony Covington had the pleasure of visiting students at John Hanson Middle School to talk about making good decisions and living a successful life.

On February 22, 2020, State’s Attorney Tony Covington had the honor of receiving the Trailblazer Award at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School’s Black History Month Celebration event. The event featured music, poetry, a living African-American museum, and more.

On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, State’s Attorney Tony Covington, Deputy State’s Attorney Karen Piper-Mitchell, and Assistant State’s Attorneys did a moot court exercise with the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy’s latest class of recruits. This exercise helps officers get accustomed to testifying in the courtroom, providing invaluable experience and feedback.

On November 25, 2019, members of the State’s Attorney’s Office had the pleasure of serving the community by volunteering with Lifestyles and providing over 665 Thanksgiving baskets to the community!

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the State’s Attorney’s Office had the pleasure of partnering with the Center for Abused Persons, Sons of St. Michael, and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office for Community Awareness and Resource Day. This event brought resources to the community related to domestic violence and sexual assault, victim services, and mental health services.

On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the State’s Attorney’s Office held the fourth annual Health and Safety Block Party 2019.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington stopped by the T-Bone and Heather Show on Star 98.3 to talk about his latest podcast on child abuse.

On Thursday, May 16, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke at the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) La Plata/Waldorf Chapter’s meeting held at the Waldorf West Library to talk about the work of the State’s Attorney’s Office.

On Monday, April 8, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke at The Center for Abused Persons 25th Annual Candlelight Vigil held at the Charles County Courthouse.

On Tuesday, February 19, 2019, Tony Covington, Deputy State’s Attorney Karen Piper-Mitchell, and Assistant State’s Attorneys conducted a Moot Court exercise for the new police academy graduates, offering these new officers with invaluable advice and courtroom experience.

On Saturday, February 23, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington had the pleasure of visiting Benjamin Stoddert Middle School for their Black History Month event and speaking with community members. 

On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington stopped by the T-Bone and Heather Show on Star 98.3 to talk about his latest podcast on drunk driving. 

On Monday, February 4, 2019, State’s Attorney Tony Covington visited and talked with the 3rd-5th graders at William A. Diggs Elementary School for Black History Month. Covington is the first African-American State’s Attorney elected in Charles County.

On Saturday, December 8, 2018, Assistant State’s Attorney Jonathan Beattie was a panelist for the Charles County Commission for Women’s event, “Join the Fight Against Opioid Abuse”.

On Friday, November 2, 2018, Chief Investigator Ted Jones spoke to students at Piccowaxen Middle School about the SAO and his responsibilities. As a part of his presentation, he discussed the office’s “Think About It” initiative and encouraged students to take the “Think About It” pledge to make productive decisions.

On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, Public Relations Specialist Kandes Carter spoke to the 7th grade students at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School about the SAO and her responsibilities.

On August 6, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington gave his “Think About It” presentation to students attending the 2018 D.A.R.E. Camp.

On July 18th, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington had the pleasure of presenting Bernie Fowler, founder of Farming 4 Hunger Inc., money raised by the SAO to support Farming for Hunger’s great programs.

From June 18th through June 20th, the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Association held their annual Summer Conference. We were proud to have our Victim Witness Assistance Unit Coordinator Debbie Harden give a presentation on her unit’s work with victims of crime.

On Friday, June 15, 2018 the SAO held its fourth annual awards dinner. The purpose of this event is to recognize the contributions of the dedicated men and women of the State’s Attorney’s Office.  

On June 15, 2018, in commemoration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the SAO had the pleasure of partnering with Charles County Department of Social Services and other agencies from the tri-county area to host an educational event for seniors.

On Friday, March 16, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington was invited to speak about the legal aspects of sexual assault at the College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus.

On Thursday, March 8, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke with the 7th grade students at General Smallwood Middle School about positive decision making.

On Tuesday, March 6, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke to the members of the Kiwanis Club of Charles County about the office’s “Think About It” initiative, as well as community concerns.

On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington attended and spoke at the Westlake Youth Athletic Organizations’s year end banquet. Headed by President and CEO Terrence Byrd, many of the teams under the organization are champions.

On Friday, February 16, 2018, Assistant State’s Attorney Andre Bruce and Chief Investigator Ted Jones participated in a Black History Panel at Berry Elementary School. The theme of the panel was “Preparing for Our Future.”

On Monday, February 12, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington visited Henry E. Lackey High School to talk to 9th and 10th graders about good decision making and a successful life.

On January 25, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington discussed the work of the State’s Attorney’s Office with College of Southern Maryland President Emeritus Dr. Bradley Gottfried on his show, Southern Maryland Perspectives.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018 and Thursday, January 18, 2018, State’s Attorney Tony Covington visited Milton Somers Middle School to talk to 7th and 8th graders about good decision making.

On Friday, December 1, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke to the Springhaven Woods Homeowner’s Association to discuss community concerns.

On December 5, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington presented the office’s Think About It initiative to 6th grade students at General Smallwood Middle School.

On November 30, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington presented the office’s Think About It initiative to 9th grade students at Thomas Stone High School.

On October 19, 2017, Investigator Ted Jones of the State’s Attorney’s Office  was a speaker at the Center for Abused Person’s Annual Community Breakfast. The annual breakfast recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and seeks to encourage others to break the silence and speak out against domestic violence.      

On September 16, 2017 State’s Attorney Tony Covington and representatives of the office took a stance against opioid abuse with the support of the community at Regency Furniture Stadium.

On September 15, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington and representatives of the office visited the Charles County Fair.

On Wednesday, September 14, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington was invited to speak about community concerns at La Plata Rotary Club’s meeting.          

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington presented the SAO’s new “Think About It” initiative to the youth at the Just Say No camp.                    

On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, the State’s Attorney’s Office enjoyed being out in the community for National Night Out 2017 and meeting with the citizens of Charles County.

On Tuesday, July 18, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington spoke at a town hall meeting held by the Women of Action for Charles County, addressing child sexual abuse.                        

On Tuesday, July 11, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington was interviewed by the T-Bone and Heather Show on Star 98.3. He discussed the opioid epidemic and how the court is responding to it, as well as other community issues.        

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington was invited by the Tri-County MD Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to be a panelist for an important discussion regarding police and community relations, as well as human trafficking in our state.      

On April 20, 2017, State’s Attorney Tony Covington was honored to speak at St. Charles High School National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to all of the students who have been inducted into the National Honors Society! Continue to exemplify the four pillars: scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Keep up the great work!

Tony Covington, State’s Attorney for Charles County, presents his office’s Special Service Award to Mark Walls of the world renowned Walls Bakery located in Waldorf. The award is given to individuals who have gone above and beyond the ordinary call of duty to support the State’s Attorney’s Office and the community.
